The History of Happy-Hollisters.com
|
Fun FactsJerry West is a pseudonym (pen name), and the Hollister series was written by a man named Andrew Svenson (1910 - 1975). Andrew Svenson and his wife had six children and the Happy Hollisters were based on his own family. "Sue" was a character that combined the Svenson's two youngest duaghters. The Svenson's oldest child was actually "Pam" (a.k.a. Laura), and "Holly" (a.k.a. Jane) really was a tomboy. (sources - various family members of Andrew Svenson) Andrew Svenson also wrote the Bret King Series under the name of Dan Scott and the Tolliver Family series under the name of Alan Stone. Andrew Svenson wrote 10 books in the Hardy Boys series and contributed outlines to an additional 18 Hardy Boys books (2 were a collaboration with Harriet S. Adams). He also worked on (and/or wrote) books in the Mel Martin Baseball series as well as the Bobbsey Twins (books 49 to 52, and book 43 was a collaboration with Harriet S. Adams) series. At one point, there were discussions with a movie studio to make a movie about The Happy Hollisters. (source - Andrew Svenson's daughter "Pam" a.k.a. Laura) There are 18 chapters in each book. The series was illustrated by Helen S. Hamilton When they first came out, one could get them monthly as part of a subscription plan. I'm told that they ranged in price from $1.00 to $1.50 each. There were 33 books in the Happy Hollisters series, and the series spanned 16 years. The series was produced by Stratemeyer Syndicates (who also produced the Nancy Drew series, the Hardy Boy series, the Tom Swift series, etc). Andrew Svenson joined the Stratemeyer Syndicate in 1948 as a writer/editor and became a partner in 1961. The Happy Hollisters series was one of the top sellers in Syndicate history.
